Group urges provinces to take quick action for patients with deadly form of skin cancer

VANCOUVER, BC, March 30, 2012 ? National skin cancer groups have come together to commend pCODR (pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review), for recognizing the clinical value of the newest treatments for melanoma. Joining the Save Your Skin Foundation are the Alberta Society of Melanoma, The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance.

?This news is the hope the melanoma community has been waiting on for years,? said Kathy Barnard, founder of Save Your Skin Foundation and a melanoma patient herself. ?Recently there have been great strides in terms of skin cancer prevention with several provinces moving to implement tanning bed legislation. It?s now time to turn to treating this deadly cancer and today?s announcement is a step in the right direction. We are hopeful that the provinces will continue to put emphasis on the importance of melanoma and make these two treatments available to patients as soon as possible.?

In its late stages, the average life expectancy for melanoma is just six months, with a one-year survival rate of only 25 percent, making metastatic melanoma one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. An estimated 5,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year and 950 will die from it. Melanoma is responsible for 75 percent of the deaths associated with skin cancer.

?This is a major first step and shows that pCODR has recognized the significant progress these two treatments represent for patients,? said Dr. Jo?l Claveau, Dermatologist at the Melanoma and Pigmented Lesions Clinic, Hospital H?tel-Dieu de Qu?bec. ?Physicians have desperately needed new advances and it?s encouraging that now we have two new options. Historically melanoma is a difficult cancer to treat and now with Yervoy and Zelboraf we have a chance to make a difference in survival for patients.?

Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma, with the incidence of the disease increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) located in the skin. One in 74 men and 1 in 90 women are expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime; 1 in 284 men and 1 in 486 women will die of it. Melanoma is clearly visible on the skin, and 90 per cent of melanomas are caused by exposure to UV light, including tanning beds.

Lawyers for Strauss-Kahn say will challenge case in prostitution scandal

Strauss-Kahn's French lawyers called a news conference in response to news he had been formally placed under investigation?into allegations he illegally participated?in a prostitution scandal, in the northern city of Lille on counts that could expose their client to up to 20 years in jail.

Lawyers for embattled former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn said on Tuesday they would challenge a fresh official investigation into allegations he illegally participated in pimping in France.

Strauss-Kahn's French legal team called a news conference in response to overnight news he had been formally placed under investigation in a prostitution scandal in the northern city of Lille on counts that could expose their client to up to 20 years in jail.

"This story doesn't have legs to stand on and the judges know it perfectly well," one of his lawyers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said before the press conference.

Strauss-Kahn's latest problems come in a week when the man once tipped to become France's next president is back under fire in New York too. Hearings in a civil case brought by a woman who accused him of trying to rape her in a Sofitel hotel suite last May begin on Wednesday.

In France, investigators are probing whether Strauss-Kahn was aware he was dealing with prostitutes and pimps when he participated in sexual encounters in Lille, Paris and Washington in 2010 and 2011 that had been organised by business acquaintances in the region.

Eight people have already been arrested in the case, and a construction firm Eiffage fired an executive suspected of using company funds to hire sex workers.

Strauss-Kahn - a former finance minister and globe-trotting head of the IMF - is married to popular journalist Anne Sinclair. He has been quoted as acknowledging his participation in "libertine soirees."

Prior to the hearings that led to him being officially placed under inquiry on Monday night, he said he was victim of a media lynching in a country where the press traditionally draws an almost indelible line between public and private life.

Strauss-Kahn was ordered to pay bail of 100,000 euros ($133,300), and was told he was being investigated on suspicion of "complicity in a pimping operation."

Under French law, that entails "helping, assisting, or protecting prostitution, taking profit from prostitution ... hiring, training or leading someone towards prostitution."

Using the services of prostitutes is not illegal in itself in France.

A source close to the investigation told Reuters that text messages sent by Strauss-Kahn to friends could be the crux of the legal case.

One of his lawyers has said Strauss-Kahn had no reason to think the women at the soirees were prostitutes, arguing at one time that it was not always easy to tell the difference between a "classy lady" and a prostitute when naked.

U.S. PROBE

On Wednesday, Strauss-Kahn's lawyers are set to defend him in a Bronx courtroom on the first day of a civil trial brought by Nafissatou Diallo, the New York maid who accused him of raping her in May 2011.

That accusation set off a media firestorm and quickly sullied his reputation. He was forced to quit his IMF job and abandon plans to run for French president.
U.S. prosecutors dropped criminal charges, however, saying they had doubts about Diallo's credibility.

Strauss-Kahn is now jobless and lives a life mainly behind closed doors.

Attempts to relaunch his career as an economist on the world conference circuit have been troubled. He gave a speech in China late last year but had to be bundled into a recent meeting at Britain's Cambridge university under heavy security.

Last Tuesday, he cancelled an appearance at an event in Brussels alongside the Eurogroup's Jean-Claude Junker following protests from members of the European Parliament.

A new surveillance camera system developed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric?can search through data on 36 million faces in one second, Tokyo video news site DigInfo TV reported Thursday.

The system detects a face from a regular photo or a surveillance video -- such as those made on six pack pick-ups at the corner convenience store -- and searches for it.

Search results appear instantaneously. Select a thumbnail image and the system will show its associated context in a surveillance video. Not the person who pilfered the chewing gum? Go to the next candidate.

"The high speed is achieved by detecting faces through image recognition when the footage from the camera is recorded and also by grouping similar faces," a company representative told DigInfo.

To work, faces must be turned with 30 degrees of the camera and be 40 by 40 pixels in size.

Hitachi Kokusai Electric expects the technology to be attractive to companies with relative large surveillance systems, such as railroads, big box stores, and law enforcement agencies.

The system should be available for purchase in fiscal year 2013.

Mitt Romney Calls For Repeal of Obamacare, Presents ... - Insurance

BOSTON, March 23 ? The presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., issued the following news release:

?Today Obamacare is two years old, but the American people are not celebrating, and neither is the White House.

Today in Metairie, Louisiana, Mitt Romney leveled harsh criticism against President Obama?s failed health care reform. ?It was always a liberal pipedream that a 2,700 page, multi-trillion dollar federal takeover could actually address the very serious problems we face with health care,? said Romney. ?Sadly, the law itself is fast becoming the national nightmare that I and other critics have always predicted.? Romney noted that, contrary to President Obama?s claims in promoting the law, costs are already exceeding projections, insurance premiums are expected to rise dramatically, millions of Americans are facing the loss of their health plans, and Medicare beneficiaries are bracing for substantial cuts.

Romney repeated his commitment to repeal Obamacare, and outlined his vision for a health care system guided by state flexibility, market competition, and consumer choice that will provide higher quality care at a lower cost to all Americans. ?Everyone can agree that health care is broken,? said Romney. ?So the last thing we should do is allow Obamacare to freeze the current system in place. Instead, we need to encourage innovation at every level. States should have the flexibility to pursue new policy approaches. Insurers and providers should have the opportunity to compete in a genuine market. Most importantly, patients should have the information and control they need to make choices about what they actually want.?

Romney also announced members of his Health Care Policy Advisory Group: Scott Atlas, Tom Barker, Scott Gottlieb, Paul Howard, and Tevi Troy. Nvidia GeForce GTX 680

The tennis game-style back-and-forth exchanges between AMD and Nvidia in their struggle for video card supremacy are enough to bewilder even the most dedicated enthusiast. Generation after generation, each company seems devoted to making changes just big enough to surpass the other?until next year, at any rate. Though at first glance it appears that Nvidia is continuing the trend with its release of its new GeForce GTX 680 video card ($499 list), based on its new Kepler architecture, there are some surprises hidden deeper. Nvidia has delivered fine frame rates, but forgone domineering supremacy of them to tackle design and power usage in ways neither company has in years. That makes the GTX 680 a card that looks thrillingly forward, even if it doesn?t always advance the performance discussion by leaps and bounds.

Kepler builds on the Fermi architecture Nvidia introduced in 2010, when it released its GeForce GTX 480. It utilizes a new version of the Fermi SM (or Streaming Multiprocessor) called SMX, which performs most of the calculations needed to render the graphics. There are two SMX units per Graphics Processing Cluster (GPC) and four GPCs on the GTX 680?s 28nm GPU?in other words, this is a fully loaded video card. It boasts a total of 1,536 CUDA parallel processing cores, 128 texture units, and 32 ROP units. Its 2GB of GDDR5 memory runs over a 256-bit memory interface (with four 64-bit controllers).

The GTX 680 has a base clock speed of 1,006MHz, but that?s only part of the story. A new technology called GPU Boost, which is similar to the Turbo Boost and Turbo Core technologies Intel and AMD have implemented in their recent processors, can dynamically crank up the clock to an average of 1,058MHz, provided it?s still operating within the proper power window?but if it can go higher, it will. (Nvidia claims it has seen speeds upwards of 1.1GHz.) The card?s TDP is a nontrivial 195 watts, and Nvidia recommends a 550-watt power supply at the minimum?all of this should tell you this is a card that takes its power seriously. (We?ll investigate this further in a while.)

One thing hasn?t changed from previous cards: Though Nvidia claims it has redesigned the fan on the GTX 680 to reduce noise and the heat sink to improve efficiency and airflow, it still uses a huge combo unit that will block an adjacent expansion slot, so plan appropriately when you?re installing. The GTX 680?s ports may not look surprising (two dual-link DVI, one HDMI, one DisplayPort), but they can do something previous Nvidia cards have not: drive four monitors at once without requiring a second card. Three of these can even be configured to use 3D Vision Surround, Nvidia?s multimonitor stereoscopic 3D technology, and the fourth can be employed for more (sigh) useful purposes.

Two other design advancements are more noticeable to the naked eye. First is that the company has taken one big (and good) step backward by reducing the length of the card. The GTX 680 measures just over 10 inches in length, which is unusual given that 11-inch flagship cards are the norm. Its auxiliary power connectors are also not what you?ve come to expect: Rather than one eight- and one six-pin PCI Express (PCIe) connector, it uses two six-pin connectors. Even more surprising is that they?re stacked, rotated 180 degrees with respect to each other, along the width of the card rather than its length. This orientation reduced clutter in our test system somewhat, but it made our PCIe power plugs a bit more difficult to remove; this is an interesting idea that we?re not yet totally sold on.

Of course, what really counts with a video card is its performance, and there the GTX 680 doesn?t disappoint. It turned in the highest single-GPU results we?ve seen on a number of our tests, when compared with the previous champ, the AMD Radeon HD 7970: a score of 3,151 in Futuremark 3DMark 11 (the AMD 7970 earned 2,754); 92.9 frames per second (fps) and? 64.2fps in DiRT 3, at 1,920 by 1,200 and 2,560 by 1,600, respectively (the AMD 7970 manage 81.2fps and 57.5, respectively, at the same resolutions), 70.3fps and 50.7fps in Lost Planet 2, versus 54.9fps and 41.3fps for the AMD 7970 (again at the same resolutions); and 41.1fps and 23.6fps in Total War: Shogun 2, compared with 31fps and 18.1fps for the AMD 7970.

But the GTX 680 was not an all-around leader?sometimes the AMD 7970 trumped it. The latter attained 59.2fps and 37.4fps in Aliens vs. Predator (at 1,920 by 1,200 and 2,560 by 1,600 respectively); Nvidia?s model managed 52fps and 31.7fps in the same runs. In H.A.W.X. 2, the GTX 680 was strongly ahead at 1,920 by 1,200 (143fps versus 131fps), but the two cards tied at 2,560 by 1,600 (each made 94fps). And on the synthetic Unigine Heaven 3.0 benchmark test, the GTX 680?s win at 1,920 by 1,200 with 43.6fps (versus 40.5fps for the 7970) was softened a little by AMD?s card scraping just to the front at 2,560 by 1,600: 29.3fps versus 28.9. These are small differences, to be sure, but they show that the GTX 680?s lead is not always a commanding one.

In the broader scheme of things, however, the GTX 680?s picture looks even better. We pitted it against both AMD?s and Nvidia?s dual-GPU cards from the last cycle, the Radeon HD 6990 and the GeForce GTX 590, and it held its own surprisingly well. Its 3DMark 11 score was darn close to those of the bigger cards (3,287 for the GTX 590 and 3,436 for the 6990). So were its frame rates in DiRT 3 (97.23fps and 100.23fps for the 6990 and the GTX 680 at 1,920 by 1,200; 70.5fps and 70.3fps at 2,560 by 1,600); Heaven (47.8fps and 50.7fps; 34.5fps and 33.7fps); and Total War: Shogun 2 (43.5fps and 41.7fps at 1,920; the AMD also rated 25.9fps at 2,560 by 1,600, a resolution the GTX 590 could not handle). And in Lost Planet 2, the GTX 680 actually matched the GTX 590 at 1,920, and was just slightly lagging at 2,560 by 1,600 (52.6fps for the GTX 590; the 6990 was noticeably further behind).

As attractive as its performance numbers generally are, however, the GTX 680 is drop-dead gorgeous when you consider its power usage. We measured full-system power usage for a test PC loaded with each of the aforementioned cards using an Extech Datalogger. The biggest draw came from the Nvidia GTX 590, which pulled about 136 watts when idle and 445 watts under load (3DMark 11 running at 2,560 by 1,600 with all the detail settings maxed out); the AMD 990 drew a marginally more respectable 131 watts and 432 watts under the same conditions. Dropping back to the single-GPU models, the GTX 680 practically matched the AMD 7970 when idle (both drew about 99 watts), but flattened it under load: Whereas the AMD 7970 pulled 342 watts, the GTX 680 drew only 298. Remember: This is a card that not only keeps pace with, and usually surpasses, the 7970, but in some cases only barely trails the dual-GPU AMD 6990 and Nvidia GTX 590.

Given all this, we can enthusiastically recommend the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680, and bestow on it our Editors? Choice award. Just make sure you know what you?re getting: a card that?s fast, but not always the fastest, in its class, and achieves this without enslaving you to your electricity provider. If you demand the absolute best frame rates all of the time, you?re admittedly better off with one of the dual-GPU behemoths. But we think the GTX 680 is powerful enough?and power-efficient enough?to recommend it above them in all but the most extraordinary situations. We imagine AMD will surmount these new performance and power differentials soon enough, but until then, if you want a truly remarkable single-GPU video card, the GTX 680 is the card you want.

One Direction Announce Headlining U.S. Tour

Chart-topping British boy band will kick off tour on May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia.

With their record-breaking debut album, Up All Night, topping the charts, One Direction plan to hit the road for their first-ever headlining tour in the States.

The U.K. boy band will kick off the trek May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up on July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way in cities like Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. News of the guys' tour comes as Up All Night made One Direction the first British group to have a debut album at #1 on the Billboard 200 on Wednesday (March 21).

U.S. hysteria for the guys has been over-the-top, with hard-core fans wildly greeting them at stops all over the country. But one of the 1D fellas, Niall Horan, explained to MTV News that the band's truly appreciative of all the fan love.

"No way were we expecting it to do anything like that," he said of enthusiasm for the album in the States. "We haven't spent that much time out here and obviously not a lot of people know us, but the power of our fans, they never seem to stop amazing us. They're absolutely brilliant and they've bought the album in great numbers."

This won't be the guys' first tour in America, though. Earlier this year One Direction toured with Big Time Rush, and things got pretty crazy, according to Horan. "Since we've been here, we did Radio City [Music Hall in New York] with Big Time Rush, and when we were leaving the venue, there was a lot of people waiting outside for us and it was like the movies," he recalled. "We were trying to drive away. [Fans] were running through traffic. It was literally like something you'd see in a movie."

It doesn't seem the hysteria is going to die down anytime soon. Before 1D even hit the road in May, they'll perform at the Kids' Choice Awards on March 31, and then they'll take the "Saturday Night Live" stage a week later, on April 7. And all this buzz around the five Brits has fans wondering if they might be getting their own show on Nickelodeon. But Horan said that's not the case, for now at least.

"We've just been doing stuff with Nickelodeon. They've been brilliant to us; they've been really good to us. [But] there's no sign of a TV show," he said. "We haven't heard anything. We're obviously doing the Kids' Choice and stuff, but there's no deal been done or anything [for a show]. They're just kind of helping us out, I suppose."

Direct email marketing for small business should focus on incentivizing customers to act. It should provide them with a reason to move forward, a reason to entertain making a purchase and ultimately, a reason to inquire. We are all familiar with the ?call to action? that marketing loves to say is such a vital part of a successful marketing strategy. Well, that requires a message that not only reaches its intended audience the way it?s suppose to, but a message that provides insight into the company?s product and service offering in a way that distinguishes that offering. Email marketing is one of the more inexpensive forms of marketing and a vital tool for small business owners who want a cost effective way to reach their customer base. So what are some of the more proactive approaches to email marketing? More importantly, how should that email marketing strategy be put together in order to achieve the best possible results?

Direct email marketing for small business must not only incentivize customers to act, but it should also keep those customers coming back for more. Inventory is an expense that all companies, big or small, need to control. Email marketing can help small companies liquidate their outdated and antiquated product offering. DENVER (AP) ? All that's needed is Peyton Manning's autograph.

After being pursued by teams around the NFL, the QB with four MVP awards is headed to the land of John Elway and Tim Tebow, agreeing to a contract with Denver that could make the Broncos an instant Super Bowl contender. It could also send one of the NFL's most intriguing young players packing.

So much for Tebowmania.

Manning called Elway on Monday morning and told the Broncos executive that he had chosen Denver over the Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers in the wildest free-agent chase of the offseason.

The Broncos and Manning's agent then hashed out details of a deal that's expected to be worth about $95 million over five years.

If they can reach an agreement, Manning could sign the deal and be introduced at a news conference as early as Tuesday.

Manning was wooed to Denver by Elway, the former QB who led the Broncos to two Super Bowl championships and now serves as their vice president of football operations. Elway never sounded all that convinced Tebow was the answer at the sport's most important position, and now could trade the hugely popular QB who energized the Broncos in a run to the playoffs last season but was plagued by erratic play.

Manning turns 36 on Saturday and missed the 2011 season because of multiple neck surgeries, which made him expendable to the rebuilding Indianapolis Colts. They cut him March 7 rather than pay a $28 million bonus.

But Manning's success in the past made him a prize that teams from San Francisco to Miami felt they couldn't pass up.

"There's a lot to be excited about," Broncos defensive end Robert Ayers, a fellow Tennessee alum, said outside the team's complex Monday. "Just being on his team is going to make you want to play better."

By luring the elite QB to Denver, Elway has delivered his biggest victory for the Broncos since he led them to their second straight Super Bowl title in 1999. He retired shortly after that 34-19 win over Atlanta and the Broncos have won just two playoff games since.

Manning won an NFL championship in 2007. And although no starting QB has ever earned a Super Bowl ring for two different teams, when he arrives at the Broncos' headquarters to sign his new deal, Manning at least can see the two Lombardi Trophies in the lobby that Elway won when he was 37 and 38.

Elway returned to the Broncos last year after the franchise hit rock bottom with an embarrassing scandal ? the team was caught videotaping a 49ers practice ? and a 4-12 season that cost coach Josh McDaniels his job.

It was McDaniels who drafted Tebow with the 25th pick of the 2010 draft.

The big question now facing Elway now is what to do about Tebow, who has three years left on his contract.

Tebow took over a 1-4 team from Kyle Orton last year and led the Broncos to an 8-8 finish and the AFC West crown with a series of stirring comebacks that captured the attention of the football world and beyond.

Tebowmania reached its apex in the playoffs, when he threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on the very first play of overtime to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. The next week, though, Tebow was smothered by the New England Patriots, who easily eliminated the Broncos, 45-10.

Afterward, Elway declared Tebow was the Broncos' starting quarterback heading into training camp this summer but said the southpaw would have to improve his flawed mechanics and footwork to win the job heading into the season.

He also said he'd spent time tutoring Tebow himself and would add more quarterback competition through the draft and free agency.

Did he ever, landing maybe the most sought-after free agent in NFL history.

Several Broncos predicted the free agency floodgates will swing wide open once Manning officially joins the team.

"I think we'll sign some guys, probably a few guys, like Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday, guys waiting to see what Peyton was going to do," Ayers said. "Defensive guys want to play with a lead, and I'm pretty sure guys are going to assume Peyton will put up points in this offense, we have some weapons."

Linebacker Joe Mays, who re-upped with Denver for three years and $12 million, said, "I can't wait to see the finished product and get a chance to go out there and hit the field."

The whirlwind courtship began two days after Manning stood alongside Colts owner Jim Irsay at an emotional farewell news conference. The Broncos flew Manning into town on a chartered plane and he then spent the day with Elway, coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders.

From there, Manning crisscrossed the country in search of a new team, as various clubs chased a guy with more than 50,000 yards passing, nearly 400 touchdowns and 11 Pro Bowl selections. After Denver, next up was a meeting with the Arizona Cardinals, and he also spent time speaking with ? or throwing for ? the Titans, 49ers and Miami Dolphins.

Last week, Manning worked out for Elway and company in North Carolina at Duke's athletic facilities. Elway said afterward that Manning "looked comfortable" throwing the ball.

A few days later, Manning decided he wanted to trade in his Colts horseshoe helmet for one adorned by a Bronco.

The move allows him to stay in the AFC, a conference he knows well and one considered weaker than the NFC at the moment, and would re-establish the tantalizing prospect of playing against his brother, New York Giants quarterback Eli, in a Super Bowl.

They already have three titles in the family ? Eli with two. Now the older brother has a chance to even the score.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper chimed in Monday, saying he hoped Tebow wasn't going anywhere and could serve an apprenticeship under Manning.

"He's a young man, right? And a year or two of working under John Elway and Peyton Manning, you know, I'm not sure any other quarterbacks around the country get that opportunity," Hickenlooper said.

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who was Manning's backup at Tennessee, said he never tried to talk Manning into coming to Colorado but was impressed by the zip on Manning's passes when he worked out with him at Duke earlier this year.

"He was fine. I kept telling him how impressed I was, how far he'd come since he came out after he had surgery," Helton said. "I'm an untrained eye, but I knew it hurt when I caught it."

With Manning joining the Broncos, oddsmakers in Las Vegas immediately made Denver one of the top choices to win the Super Bowl next season, which will be played in Manning's hometown of New Orleans.
