You may be nearing the menopause, you may have already reached it, or you may even be coming out the other end and wondering how to protect your heart, bones and memory in the long term. You probably don?t know which way to turn as there is so much conflicting advice out there.

Many years of running the Natural Health Advisory Service led me to realise that when it comes to menopausal symptoms falling levels of oestrogen is not the only trigger and other factors such as dietary and lifestyle inadequacies must also be taken into account. Pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as physical and mental stress all take their toll on wellbeing. Add to this the fact that levels of some nutrients drop naturally as the years go by and it is not surprising that by the time many women reach the menopause they are effectively firing on two cylinders instead of four. As a result if they are not in a good nutritional or psychological state the more severe their menopausal symptoms are likely to be.

Once we take into account that menopausal symptoms are not all to do with falling levels of oestrogen and that physical and mental factors also have a part to play it follows that all three areas must be addressed.

Diet Matters

For example, research shows that Japanese women who eat a lot of soya, which is rich in a type of phytoestrogen known as isoflavones, do not generally suffer from hot flushes and other symptoms. In contrast 80 ? 85 per cent of women who eat a typically western diet do tend to experience symptoms.

The richest sources of phytoestrogens are soya products, eg soya milk, tofu and soya flour. Other sources include organic linseeds ( aka flaxseeds), lentils, chick peas, mung beans, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds, green and yellow veg. You need to eat at least 100mg of phytopestrogens a day to help alleviate symptoms, which for best results should be taken at regular intervals.

Supplimentary Help

At the time of the menopause supplementing our diet with nutrients that time and nature have taken away as well as boosting oestrogen levels with standardised supplements can help alleviate hot flushes and night sweats and other symptoms. Omega 7 ? derived from the Sea Buckthorn Berry delivers Omega 3,6,7 and 9 fatty acids. In a recent clinical trial it was found to enhance and regenerate the mucous membranes in the vagina. Phyto Soya Vaginal Gel has also been shown in clinical trials to significantly improve the condition of the vaginal tissues. Vaginal dryness is a common side-effect of the drop in oestrogen levels at the time of the menopause.

Natural Vitamin E, Dong Quai, Sage Leaf and Ginseng are other supplements that help to control hot flushes.

Relax It

Several studies have shown that relaxation can help reduce the intensity of hot flushes. Try to take time out for yourself on a regular basis every day. You may also like to try yoga, massage, Pilates and visualisation.

Move It

As well as increasing energy levels, regular exercise can help to relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. It can also help to boost confidence self-esteem and wellbeing. You should aim to exercise for at least half an hour, five times a week. Any activity that puts weight through your bones such as jogging, brisk walking, racquet sports, weight lifting, skipping or even squeezing tennis balls are the best options. They help to stimulate the regeneration of bone tissue and reduce calcium loss helping to protect against osteoporosis.

The fact that there are so many scientifically based self-help options to help alleviate the symptoms of the menopause and preserve the health of both your heart and your bones, is extremely good news. There is no substitute for learning to meet the needs of your body especially at the time of the menopause.

What we thought!

Wow, what a fun DVD! When we received this, we popped it in the DVD player right away and had so much fun dancing around the living room. 7 scientists aim to make strides in predicting and preventing preterm birth

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 24, 2012 -With the help of funding from the March of Dimes, researchers from five states and Canada are seeking answers to questions such as how cellular-level processes that control uterine muscles may affect preterm labor, the causes of preeclampsia, and how air pollution may affect pregnancy and preterm birth - all with the goal of preventing preterm birth so more babies will get a healthy start in life.

These topics are among the work of seven researchers that will be supported for the next three years by new March of Dimes Prematurity Research Initiative (PRI) grants. The nearly $3 million in grants will support scientific efforts to learn to identify which women are at risk for preterm birth and how to prevent it. These 2012 grants bring the eight-year-old program's total to more than $22 million.

Following three decades of increases, in 2010 the United States saw the first four-year decline in the preterm birth rate, to 11.99 percent. Despite the improvement, however, nearly half a million babies are born too soon each year, the March of Dimes notes.

The March of Dimes has set a goal of lowering the nation's preterm birth rate to 9.6 percent by 2020. The goal was set byestimating the maximum achievable benefits of applying known strategies to prevent preterm birth, such as smoking cessation programs, progesterone treatments for medically eligible women, and others, but recognized that continued research is needed to yield new medical advances.

Sarah K. England, PhD, professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Basic Science Research, at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, has been among the PRI grantees since the program began in 2005. Dr. England is researching how mutations to a gene that regulates tiny openings in cell membranes thatallow potassium to flow out of uterine muscle cells affect preterm labor. When potassium exits the cells, the uterus relaxes, allowing the pregnancy to continue. Dr. England is investigating whether a genetic mutation may cause the cell membranes to close early, preventing the potassium from leaving the uterus, triggering labor. If this proves correct, it could lead to the development of drugs that open the channels and prevent or halt preterm labor.

Other grant recipients include:

• Jennifer Catherine Condon, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, who is investigating the role of endoplasmic reticulum in regulating an enzyme called caspase-3. Low levels of caspase-3 may trigger preterm labor. If so, it may be possible to develop drugs to regulate enzyme levels and prevent preterm labor.
• Nihar Ranjan Nayak, DVM, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Stanford University School of Medicine, who is studying the interaction of two genes in the placenta and how that may cause preeclampsia, a pregnancy-related form of high blood pressure that can be fatal for both the mother and baby and is responsible for about 15 percent of premature births in the United States. The cause of preeclampsia is not known, and the only effective treatment is induction of early delivery.
• Tippi C. MacKenzie, MD, assistant professor, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery and Fetal Treatment Center, the University of California, San Francisco, who is investigating how the mother's immune system may trigger preterm labor after an infection.
• Judith T. Zelikoff, PhD, professor, Department of Environmental Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, who is investigating if there is a cause and effect relationship between air pollution and the risk of preterm delivery.
• Sudhansu K. Dey, PhD, professor and LovaRiekert Chair, Department of Reproductive Sciences, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH, whois investigating chemicals that regulate inflammation after a uterine infection to understand how they may contribute to preterm labor.
• Sylvain Chemtob, MD, PhD, professor, departments of Pediatricsand Pharmacology, CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center, Montreal, who is investigating how proteins in the uterine wall may contribute to preterm labor.

Historic Charleston, South Caroline With One Of Its Many Steeples

The southern town of Charleston, South Carolina is so lovely that it deserves multiple visits to really get to know all of its? hidden charms. That is exactly what my husband and I did on our road trip down to Florida and back. You may recall that we had stopped for one day ?in Charleston?but the lure of the picturesque city was calling us back as we headed north to our home in New England. Once again we stayed at the French Quarter Inn and were greeted with Champagne as we checked in.

After unpacking and settling in to our French inspired ?bedroom,?we headed out to explore the city. The hotel is within walking distance of most everything that you want to visit and is right across from the restored markets.

Walking always builds up your appetite, so we headed back to the hotel to enjoy the free wine and cheese reception and meet some of the other guests staying at the hotel. ?Then it was upstairs to our room to change for dinner, a short walk away.

Tonight?s dinner reservation was at FIG. The initials stand for Food is Good and believe me it was. Chef Mike Lata was named Best Chef of the Southeast by the James Bread Foundation in 2010. The well known restaurant is renowned for its quality ingredients sourced from local farmers and growers. The restaurant feels like a combination of a neighborhood caf? and a little chic bistro.

Appetizers were classic yet served in a stylish and creative way. We started with a Wagyu beef carpaccio and chicken liver p?t?.

We had made a reservation at Husk for lunch. This is probably one of the most well known restaurants in town and it didn?t disappoint.

Husk is noted for its farm to table meals. After walking in the front door you see a chalk board that has a list of ingredients used in the days cooking and the farms they came from.

They were the best we have ever had.

Our evening started with cocktails at The Gin Joint and should have ended there with some small plates. The Gin joint specializes in pre-Prohibition spirits. Their cocktails are made with the best quality ingredients and spirits. They are so particular about making the best cocktail that they juice their own fruit and make their own syrups. The many paged cocktail menu is full of slings, smashes, fizzes and fine small batch sipping spirits.

After sampling two of their delicious cocktails, I can see why they have been written up so often in both local and national magazines and papers.

I don?t like to criticize restaurants?that is up to local reviewers. I have decided to make an exception and say that my tip of the day is not to go to Amen Street restaurant. The she crab soup was like eating a bowl of bland thick gravy. A salad of marinated tomatoes, hearts of palm and gorgonzola was sent back because it was uneatable. Oysters on the half shell were fine but shucked in the kitchen instead of out front. This has been the only restaurant on our entire trip that we left without ordering a main course. I don?t think I need to say more.

As much fun as we have had on our two brief stays?we are already looking forward to our next trip to Charleston, South Carolina. The historic city, the delicious food and the warmth of the people will keep us coming back for many years to come.

LONDON (AP) ? Dereck Chisora apologized "wholeheartedly" Monday for the brawl with David Haye that followed his loss to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

Haye blamed Chisora for the clash that followed his fellow Londoner's defeat in Munich and the beaten challenger has acknowledged that the violence at the post-bout news conference marred the biggest night of his career.

"Whilst my behavior was inexcusable, there were many things that went on behind the scenes that ultimately caused my frustrations to boil over," Chisora said. "Despite all of this, the bottom line is I have let my family, my team and ? worst of all ? the sport I love down.

"I acknowledge that my actions were totally unprofessional, with or without provocation. Now, with a cool head and the benefit of hindsight, my actions at the weekend were regrettable to say the least and I am deeply embarrassed."

Chisora, who was questioned for seven hours by German police and is being investigated by the British Boxing Board of Control over the incident, did not say what provoked him to descend from the top table and confront Haye.

Former WBA champion Haye had been at the news conference trying to taunt Klitschko into agreeing to a bout later this year. Haye also waved three fingers at Chisora, indicating that his compatriot had just suffered the third loss of his 18-fight professional career.

"I cannot go into the specific details at the moment as, quite rightly, the British Boxing Board of Control will be investigating this matter," said Chisora, adding that he was struck by a bottle during the brawl.

"I have a duty as a professional boxer to conduct myself properly at all times, especially with boxing being a sport of controlled aggression. I have let lots of people down on Saturday night, including myself, and for that I am truly sorry."

German police released Chisora without charge and want to speak to Haye, who left the country before being apprehended but released a statement Monday in which he alleged that Chisora and his entourage were wholly to blame.

"Chisora climbed down from the top table, removed his robe and then walked towards me, entourage in tow, in an aggressive manner," Haye said. "I held my ground, but unfortunately he caused a serious disturbance to occur, something which threatened to damage the reputation of the sport we both love."

Haye said he was at the bout as a commentator and had only become involved in the news conference dialogue by Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente.

"(I) have been thinking about what happened ever since, as well as replaying the incident many times via YouTube," Haye said. "I am bitterly disappointed to have been a part of what transpired on Saturday evening.

"I realize I am no angel and don't mind a bit of professional trash-talk to help raise boxing's profile, but during my 21 years in the sport I have never been involved in or even witnessed such a serious fracas."

Boente told Sky Sports News that he had turned down a request from Haye's camp for ringside seats and that his fighter was not interested in being part of a comeback by Haye.

Chisora will appear before British boxing's governing body on a misconduct charge Wednesday but the BBBC cannot take action against Haye because the Londoner retired last year after a defeat to Klitschko's younger brother, Wladimir.

Haye has since decided he wants to return to the ring to fight Vitali Klitschko but would need to apply to the BBBC for a license.

Chisora slapped Klitschko at Friday's weigh-in and spat water in the face of Wladimir Klitschko before the fight.

The body is looking into his behavior "prior, during and after his contest," BBBC General Secretary Robert Smith said in a statement. "A further statement will be issued once the stewards have decided on what action will be taken."

Chisora taunted Haye about losing the WBA belt to Wladimir Klitschko in July, leading to a heated exchange before the pair came to blows. Haye also fought with members of Chisora's entourage, and his coach, Adam Booth, was bleeding from a cut on his head.

Booth said Monday he did not know what he had been hit with.

He told Sky Sports News that Haye would be "more than happy" to speak to German police if contacted and denied rumors that the brawl had been staged as a publicity stunt.

"I didn't get that memo," Booth said. "If I did, I might have ducked."

Haye said he would assist the BBBC but did not say whether he would return to Munich to speak to police.

Chisora faces a possible charge of simple assault in Germany. His coach, Don Charles, also faces a charge of assault for his involvement in the melee. The pair have returned to England.

Munich police spokesman Werner Kraus said several legal obstacles need to be resolved before a warrant could be issued for Haye's arrest.

"The criminal police are still investigating. If they decide to take it further, they will have to present the case to the state prosecutor for review," Kraus said. "Eventually the state prosecutor could decide to ask, in this case the British police, for help.

"But ultimately only the state prosecutor can make that decision."

Haye could face charges of simple assault and grievous bodily harm.

A conviction for assault carries a possible prison term of up to five years, while grievous bodily harm could lead to a 10-year sentence.

Wladimir Klitschko said Monday he was "shocked and deeply embarrassed" by Chisora and his team.

He said "these kinds of actions ... must be stopped, otherwise the sport of boxing is going to go down the hill fast."

Models underestimate future temperature variability: Food security at risk

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? Climate warming caused by greenhouse gases is very likely to increase the variability of summertime temperatures around the world by the end of this century, a University of Washington climate scientist said Friday. The findings have major implications for food production.

Current climate models do not adequately reflect feedbacks from the relationship between the atmosphere and soil, which causes them to underestimate the increase of variability in summertime temperatures, said David Battisti, a UW professor of atmospheric sciences.

While warmer temperatures already have implications for food production in the tropics, the new findings suggest the increase in the volatility of summertime temperatures will have serious effects in grain-growing regions of Europe and North and South America, Battisti said.

"If there's greater variability, the odds of the temperature being so high that you can't grow a crop are greater," he said.

"In terms of regional and global food security, it's not good news."

Battisti presented his findings at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver, Canada. His discussion was part of a panel on climate and global food security that included Rosamond Naylor of Stanford University and Daniel Vimont of the University of Wisconsin, with whom he has collaborated on previous food security research.

Earlier research has shown that by the end of this century, the increase in average growing season temperature, if other factors remain the same, will likely reduce yields of rice, corn and soybean 30 to 40 percent. Already rice yields in the tropics are being affected by higher temperatures, affecting nations such as Indonesia, which frequently imports rice to stabilize prices, Battisti said.

In addition, the scientists say global warming will have greater impacts than previously thought on the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation, a tropical phenomenon that has global impact on climate and food production. Their conclusions are based on geological and other proxy records of climate and El Ni?o from the last 10,000 years, plus recent analyses of long-term climate changes because of global warming.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations body conducting ongoing assessments of climate change, has estimated that future month-to-month temperature variability during summer months is likely to be greater in some places and less in some places, but should stay roughly constant in many places.

But the new modeling work, Battisti said, shows most areas can expect to see greater variability in summer temperatures between now and 2085, with the biggest impacts in Europe, Africa and South America.

"The increased variability will be pretty ubiquitous. You will see it pretty much everywhere."

Increased temperature variability compounds the loss of production because of higher average temperatures, Battisti said. Add higher fertilizer prices and other market pressures to the mix "and food insecurity is likely to be higher than it has been for some time."
